Concepts, characters, and caffeine

Man this semester's really starting to become a major juggling act. I guess I'm used to that now. Anyway, because I'm doing a crossover between my drawing class and this animation class, I've done some photoshop/mudbox concepts that are useful for both of my assignments. Here's a couple that I've managed to make.

And here's an example of a mudbox sculpt that I used in those photoshop compositions:

Part of this project is redesigning the old features, because it's a character that was drawn and sculpted prior to this course.
This was a drawing of the character I made about a year ago.
And here's the sculpture that was made afterwards:

Now I've evaluated the character, and taken features that needed to be improved, like the mask and certain armour pieces.

Now I just need to start modelling the character and do some orthographic drawings, stay tuned.

Sketches

Hey so here's some brief sketches of my character. I've been experimenting and researching various things like drapery, various kinds of armour and steel meshes.

In the sketches I've been looking at how I can change the basic structure of the character, and altering the defining features. It's been a challenge examining the character itself, but I think I'm starting to head in the right direction.

Next post I'll be describing the character in detail with more backstory, more detailed drawings and concepts.

Project Brief: Character Design

Alright, for our major project we have to design a character. This is the basic structure and starting point of any successful animation/game/film character, so it's pretty important.
We'll be coming up with a backstory for our character, designing colour, shape, silhouettes, texture and composition, then eventually modelling it all in Maya.

I've been doing a bit of research into the basics of it, what media can be used, structures behind other famous designs and how they work.

Here's a neat video from a sculptors perspective, which explains how sculpting can be used to great effect in character design.
For me it's great inspiration as sculpture really is my forte', so I'll probably do some sculpture sketches for my initial designs.

Next post I'll be describing my character and showing some sketches and starting points.

Greetings

Hey there, welcome to my blog.

This is going to be my blog for my animation class that I'm currently doing as part of the 2 year Diploma in Creative Technologies.

Through the magic of this thing you humans call 'The Internet' , I'll be putting up a synopsis of the brief I've been given and other things related to the project.

Stay tuned.
